A once-feared army general, who ruled Indonesia with an iron fist for more than three decades, has a message for voters ahead of upcoming elections – from beyond the grave.

“I am Suharto, the second president of Indonesia,” the former general says in a three-minute video that has racked up more than 4.7 million views on X and spread to TikTok, Facebook and YouTube.

While mildly convincing at first, it’s clear that the stern-looking man in the video isn’t the former Indonesian president. The real Suharto, dubbed the “Smiling General” because he was always seen smiling despite his ruthless leadership style, died in 2008 at age 86.

The video was an AI-generated deepfake, created using tools that cloned Suharto’s face and voice. “The video was made to remind us how important our votes are in the upcoming election,” said Erwin Aksa, deputy chairman of Golkar – one of Indonesia’s largest and oldest political parties. He first shared the video on X ahead of February 14 elections.~

Ethical Problems of the Use of Deepfakes in the Arts and Culture

Abstract

Deepfakes are highly realistic, albeit fake, audiovisual contents created with AI. This technology allows the use of deceptive audiovisual material that can impersonate someone’s identity to erode their reputation or manipulate the audience. Deepfakes are also one of the applications of AI that can be used in cultural industries and even to produce works of art. On the one hand, it is important to clarify whether deepfakes in arts and culture are free from the ethical dangers mentioned above. On the other hand, there are specific ethical issues in this field of application. Deepfake technologies can be used to include the performance of deceased persons in audiovisual materials for the dissemination of cultural heritage, and to generate images or sounds in the style of real authors, but deepfakes are also potentially misleading by blurring the boundary between artwork and reality, and raise questions about the relationship between technology, artificial creativity and authorship. The answer to these problems requires an analysis of the normative foundations of copyright to accommodate the new role of AI.

Death is no longer the end of an actor’s career, Tom Hanks theorized during a recent conversation on “The Adam Buxton Podcast” (via BBC). Why? Artificial intelligence and deepfakes, the actor said. Both technologies will be on full display at the Cannes Film Festival thanks to the world premiere of “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which used AI to help de-age Harrison Ford so that he resembles his appearance from 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

“The first time we did a movie that had a huge amount of our own data locked in a computer — literally what we looked like — was a movie called ‘The Polar Express,'” Hanks said, referring to Robert Zemeckis’ 2004 Christmas movie. “We saw this coming, we saw that there was going to be this ability to take zeros and ones from inside a computer and turn it into a face and a character. That has only grown a billion-fold since then and we see it everywhere.”

To investigate this, the team turned their attention to two common and potentially lethal social problems – drunk driving and domestic violence, real-life issues often targeted by social policy changes and activism efforts. Lu and Chu wanted to see how public service announcements that showed deepfakes of deceased victims of drunk driving and domestic violence would impact viewers as they narrated the stories of their deaths. 

“The prosocial deepfakes investigated in the current study take the form of deepfake resurrection”, the authors explained in the paper, “which features a dead victim who is brought back to life with deepfakes that enable this victim to advocate for an issue related to the cause of their death.”

AI and Human Rights: A Critical Ethico-Legal Overview

Abstract: The capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI) in ensuring human rights are tremendous. However, it may also have some denting effect on human rights. The use of AI-based surveillance, face detection, etc. has proved racially discriminatory, resulting in grave human rights violations. AI experts have also admitted to the possibility of developers' bias resulting in biased AI inventions. This research article is an attempt to analyze the possible adverse impact of AI technology on the protection of human rights. The author has done an analytical overview of practical instances of AI-related human rights violations in the recent past. An empirical analysis comprising of an observation tool was employed to observe and analyze the expert opinion expressed during a conference. Based on doctrinal and empirical analysis, the author has made some recommendations, such as including technology-related human rights in national and international human rights statutes, to strike a balance between human rights and AI innovation, with the ultimate goal of protecting human rights.

Let the dead talk: How deepfake resurrection narratives influence audience response in prosocial contexts

With the unceasing advancement of novel digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) is projected to change and challenge established social dynamics. As such, a deeper understanding of AI and its impacts will prove to be crucial in an AI-enriched world. In the current study, we focus on an emerging AI-based technology, deepfakes, and investigate the effects of a lesser-known use of deepfakes (i.e., using deepfakes for prosocial purposes). Specifically, we examine the impacts of exposure to a “deepfake resurrection” narrative on individuals' policy support and activism intentions in two contexts (i.e., drunk driving and domestic violence). We conducted a between-subjects experiment (N = 1990) that varied in the use (vs. non-use) of deepfakes and tested four psychological processes related to the effects of deepfake resurrection narratives. While the moderating role of point of view and the mediating role of perceived desecration of the dead did not receive much support, the narrative-based and the surprise-focused mediational pathways were shown to be important mechanisms of deepfake resurrection narratives. Finally, we reflect on the potential of prosocial deepfakes and deepfake resurrection narratives and discuss the findings’ relevance to both theory and practice.

A small academic and corporate team of researchers say they have created a way to preserve the biometric privacy of people whose faces are posted on social media.

And while that innovation is worthy of examination, so is a couple phrases that the team has developed for their facial anonymization: “a responsible use for deepfakes by design” and “My Face, My Choice.”

For most people, deepfakes exist because humans like to be fooled. For the rest, they exist to dominate a future when objective proof or truth no longer exist.

Two scientists from State University of New York, Binghamton, and another from Intel Labs say in a non-peer-reviewed paper that they recognize the identity and privacy dangers posed by face image scrapers like Clearview AI that harvest billions of faces for their own purposes and without permission.

The answer, they say, is qualitatively dissimilar deepfakes. That is, using deepfake algorithms to alter faces just enough that the faces cannot be facially recognized by software. The result is a facial image in a group photo that is true enough to the original (and free of AI weirdness) that anyone familiar with a person would quickly accept it as representative.

The researchers also have proposed metrics for doing this under which a deepfake (though, again, still recognizable by many humans) is randomly generated with a guaranteed dissimilarity.

At a glance, the above three images look just like me. Look closer and you might notice that my skin is too smooth, my clothes distorted in places — details that might be dismissed as an overdone Photoshop edit.

Thing is, I never posed for these pictures. Nor have I ever sported shoulder-length hair or a cowboy hat, for that matter. These images are entirely the product of artificial intelligence, utilizing a cutting-edge technology developed by Google scientists called DreamBooth.

Since its release in late August, DreamBooth has already advanced the field of AI art by leaps and bounds. In a nutshell, it gives AI the ability to study what individuals or objects look like, then synthesizes a “photorealistic” image of the subject in a completely new context.

This hints at a far wider debate in the world of deepfakes – that of ethics. If it’s now possible to create a fake but lifelike version of anyone else using technology, aren’t there huge implications for fraud, identify and intellectual property theft and all kinds of exploitation, from financial to sexual? Graham says that the technology comes with responsibility and that Metaphysic has a “big focus” on ethics and – in particular – consent. The rule, he says, must be that individuals own and control their own hyperreal likeness, meaning they also own and control the data involved in training and creating that likeness. 

In other words, people must have complete control over their digital DNA. Metaphysic has launched a platform called Every Anyone which enables individuals to own their own data when they interact with third party companies who operate in the metaverse. “Ultimately I believe that biometric data that represents us as individuals will be regulated [by governments],” Graham says. Which, for avoidance of doubt, would be a good thing.

Technologies can have profound effects on social moral systems. Is there any way to systematically investigate and anticipate these potential effects? This paper aims to contribute to this emerging field on inquiry through a case study method. Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion, high fidelity but capable of being run on off-the-shelf consumer hardware, is now in use by art generator services like Artbreeder, Pixelz.ai and more. But the model’s unfiltered nature means not all the use has been completely above board.

For the most part, the use cases have been above board. For example, NovelAI has been experimenting with Stable Diffusion to produce art that can accompany the AI-generated stories created by users on its platform. Midjourney has launched a beta that taps Stable Diffusion for greater photorealism.

But Stable Diffusion has also been used for less savory purposes. On the infamous discussion board 4chan, where the model leaked early, several threads are dedicated to AI-generated art of nude celebrities and other forms of generated pornography.

Abstract
This paper provides an overview of today's values for building and using Artificial Intelligence in day-today
operations, but the focus of the research is on the judgment values developed to create a more moral
and ethical AI that is in line with today's macroeconomic needs and aims to achieve the goal of sustainable
economic development. This research follows the concept of a case study combined with a qualitative
research regarding our actual status quo in offering moral and ethical value to machines and to software
that could one day replace informal social institutions. Also, the main focus of this research paper is to
highlight if we could use or insert Artificial Intelligence as guidance tool to our general wellbeing and also
to empower automatization as mechanism for a sustainable future, because today’s automated corporate
governance is based on standardized processes for performance management, standardized processes for
advanced analysis.

Los Angeles-based video editor and political satirist Justin T. Brown has found himself at the center of a contentious debate thanks to his AI-generated images that portray prominent politicians such as Donald Trump, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden engaged in fictional infidelities.

His provocative series, christened “AI will revolutionize the blackmail industry,” quickly came under fire, leading to Brown’s banishment from the Midjourney AI art platform, which he used to generate the pictures.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the harmful use of deepfakes in an organizational context, based on the only two cases the authors found that were addressed by the media from the perspective of corporate fraud. This study offers an overview of deepfake technology, and in particular, examines five W questions to better decipher the impact of these tools on organizations: What is deepfake? Who is the fraudster and who is targeted? Why use them and how? And What after? Based on these five W questions, this study provides an in-depth discussion of the two cases identified. Even though this technology has several advantages, this study examines its dark side.

Thanks to deepfake technology, legendary cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar is featured in a new campaign – as an 11-year-old. The campaign, created by VMLY&R for Ageas Federal Life Insurance (AFLI) used custom DeepFake AI video regeneration technology to re-create a young Sachin. According to VMLY&R, this is the first time DeepFake AI video technology has been used in a campaign to de-age a person by over 35 years. For the past few years, my colleagues and I at UMass Boston’s Applied Ethics Center have been studying how everyday engagement with AI challenges the way people think about themselves and politics. We’ve found that AI has the potential to weaken people’s capacity to make ordinary judgments. We’ve also found that it undermines the role of serendipity in their lives and can lead them to question what they know or believe about human rights. And the questions get even trickier when these new tools are used to enhance understanding of the past and reanimate historical episodes. If Burke is right to understand political belonging this way, deepfake technology offers a powerful way to connect people to the past, to forge this intergenerational contract. In 2019, Google released Translatotron, an AI system capable of directly translating a person’s voice into another language. The system could create synthesized translations of voices to keep the sound of the original speaker’s voice intact. But Translatotron could also be used to generate speech in a different voice, making it ripe for potential misuse in, for example, deepfakes. This week, researchers at Google quietly released a paper detailing Translatotron’s successor, Translatotron 2, which solves the original issue with Translatotron by restricting the system to retain the source speaker’s voice.
